Carbon Reduction Program (CRP)

The Commission works with its Milwaukee Urbanized Area (MUA) Transportation Improvement Program Committee to evaluate and recommend projects for funding directed to the MUA from the Federal CRP, which is intended to reduce transportation-related carbon emissions.

CRP Program

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Carbon Reduction Program (CRP) provides flexible funding that may be used by States and local governments for projects to reduce transportation carbon dioxide emissions, including traffic management, public transportation, pedestrian facilities, alternative fuels, and port electrification.

Funding Eligibility

Eligible projects include electric vehicles and charging stations, diesel engine replacements and retrofits, transit improvements, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, shared micromobility projects (including shared scooter systems), street lighting, and more. In addition to improving air quality and reducing congestion, CRP projects can improve equitable access to transportation services, improve safety, and promote application of new and emerging technologies.

FFY 2025-2028 CRP Selection Process

The State’s application period for CRP funding for federal fiscal years 2025 through 2028 closed on June 30, 2024. Commission staff is currently reviewing the applications and preparing a set of recommended projects for the Milwaukee TIP Committee to consider at a future meeting.

Next Application Period

The next project solicitation for FFY 2029 and 2030 CRP funding is expected to occur in 2026. Information will be provided here and on the WisDOT CRP page as it becomes available.
