Entry/Senior Land Use Planner

The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, the nationally regarded regional planning agency for the seven county greater Milwaukee area, and the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for the five urban areas within Southeastern Wisconsin, is seeking applicants for a full-time Land Use Planner or Senior Land Use Planner.

The Commission is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our diverse team of planners, engineers and scientists focused on addressing issues that transcend the political boundaries and fiscal capabilities of individual communities. The successful individual will be part of an interdisciplinary team conducting land use planning projects.

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct research, data collection, and analysis pertaining to land use, environmental, socioeconomic, and general planning topics
  • Prepare and present updates and amendments of county and local plans, such as comprehensive plans and park and open space plans
  • Present at and attend related local government committee and commission meetings
  • Provide plan implementation guidance to county and local governments
  • Provide review and analysis of sanitary sewer extension and other technical plans

Core Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in urban planning or a related field
  • A minimum of three to five years of relevant work experience and/or a master’s degree
  • Experience with written and oral communication, technical writing, report composition, and the display of charts, maps, and graphs to convey technical information
  • Qualities of tact, good judgement, and diplomacy, and a high degree of professional competency
  • Understanding of the basic concepts, principles, and techniques of city and regional planning
  • Understanding of the Federal and State laws and regulations related to planning and land development
  • Experience with and understanding of aerial photographs, and technical plans such as utility plans, erosion control/grading plans, site plans, etc.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft software, Adobe Creative Cloud, and ESRI mapping and analytics (ArcGIS Pro)

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $50,000 to $90,000 depending upon education, experience, and placement within the organizational structure. A salary exceeding this range may be considered for highly qualified applicants.
